Es gibt keine europäische Identität 

ovvero:
Non esiste un'identità europea.

Wir sollten vernünftig werden: Die Vereinigten Staaten von Europa sind eine schöne, vielleicht auch notwendige Idee. Aber sie richtet sich an den Verstand, nicht ans Gefühl.

ovvero:
Dobbiamo essere ragionevoli: Gli Stati Uniti d'Europa sono una bella idea,

forse anche necessaria. Ma il concetto si rivolge alla comprensione e non al sentimento.
